Barns of Rose Hill. 95 Chalmers Ct. Berryville. The Yesterday Swing Orchestra, under the direction of Bob Johnson, is the Shenandoah Valley’s best source for authentic Big Band entertainment. The classic sounds of Glen Miller, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, and others are brought to life by this ensemble. Old Town Winchester Pedestrian Mall. Frederick County Farm Bureau presents “Winchester’s Main Street Agriculture”. Frederick County agriculture will be highlighted with farmers and vendors providing local foods, educational displays, and activities for kids. Downtown restaurants offering meals featuring fresh, local produce, meats, and dairy. There will be cooking demonstrations, advice for gardeners, live animals living in Frederick County, and more. 20 Historical Open House

Dearmont Hall. 470 Dearmont Hall Lane. White Post.  1–3pm. The Clarke County Historical Association, is opening the historic home of Mosby Ranger Washington Dearmont in a special program. Dearmont Hall, once called Soldier’s Rest, is a handsome, classic 1851 Virginia home near White Post. Washington Dearmont (1829-91)was a member of Company C of Mosby’s vaunted command, the 43rd Virginia Cavalry. After the War, he served for four years as Clarke County’s Sheriff, 1866-70. 3 Introduction to Horses

Elmington Farm, LLC. 345 Elmington Lane. Berryville. 10am–12pm. Participants will learn barn rules, safety around horses, how to put on a halter and lead a horse, and tour the facilities. They will explore the different types of grooming tools, their proper use and how to safely and correctly groom a horse, discuss parts of a horse, breeds, colors, and gaits., explore the types of tack, identify parts and how to clean, and examine different types of riding and how the certain breeds are used for those disciplines. Parent must accompany children under 18.  $25. A parent of a participant under 18 attends for free, additional siblings are $15 each.

 

3 Walking Qigong classes

16 /17 Octobeer Fest

Old Town Winchester Pedestrian Mall. This two-day event will celebrate German heritage and bring herren und frauen to Old Town Winchester. Attendees will have the opportunity to sample German inspired food, music, craft beer and wine. The Park High German Band will be performing live each day in Shenandoah University’s Feltner Lot and a DJ will be playing all of today’s top hits at the Old Court House Civil War Museum lawn. Octobeer Fest will offer a kids’ activities area by the Splash Pad. There will be face painting, balloon animals, caricaturist, photo booth, a magician, and much more! There will be a roaming stilt walker, and other activities set up from the north to south side of the walking mall. On Saturday there will be two puppet shows. Everyone is invited to compete in the Best Dressed Lederhosen and DirndlContest on Friday night.

 

17 The Three Sisters Regional Art Challenge Show and Sale

Barns of Rose Hill, 95 Chalmers Ct., Berryville. The Three Sisters Regional Art Challenge Show & Sale explores facets of the Native American Three Sisters (agricultural treasures of maize/corn, pole beans and winter squash/gourds). This unique art show and sale is a preview to The Gathering, an educational celebration of agri-culture. The show and sale also features Gourd artist Mike Connolly and Native American “Spirit Painting” artist Stacey Littledeer. The show and sale will run October 17– November, 21, 2015. It’s a Good Day to Die. Presentation by Renowned Native American Leader Dennis Banks.

Barns of Rose Hill. 95 Chalmers Ct.. Berryville. Dennis Banks co-founded the American Indian Movement (A.I.M.) in 1968 to call attention to the plight of urban Indians in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The film presents an intimate look at Dennis Banks’ life beginning with his early experience in boarding schools, through his military service in Japan, his transformative experience in Stillwater State Prison and subsequent founding of a movement that, through confrontational actions in Washington DC, Custer South Dakota and Wounded Knee, changed the lives of American Indians forever. Bittersweet and compelling, A Good Day to Die, charts the rise and fall of a movement that fought for the civil rights of American Indians.
