Life Itself

Book Signing

Skyline Higher, by Katherine Cobb. Winchester Book Gallery, 185 North Loudoun Street, Winchester. 2–4pm. From her first day at Skyline High School in Oakland, California, 14-year-old Anna Trapani’s life begins to change. When the unthinkable happens, Anna is left numb and lost. Through the support of her friends and the opportunity to love again, she tries to make sense of her life, but her emotional fragility and pressure to fit in lead her down some turbulent paths.

Art at the Mill

Through May 10. Burwell-Morgan Mill, Millwood. Art at the Mill has become one of the premier art shows in the mid-Atlantic region, attracting artists and buyers from more than a dozen states. Around 300 artists display more than 1,000 pieces of art of all descriptions and media. Art at the Mill is Clarke County Historic Association’s primary fundraiser, providing the operating funds for both the Mill and the museum and archives. Volunteers are needed to help with art sales, gallery visitor service, and other areas. Contact the museum at 540-955-2600 if you would like to volunteer. Lomax Project

Barns of Rose Hill, 95 Chalmers Court, Berryville. Doors open at 7:30pm; show starts at 8. Focusing on songs collected by folklorist and field recording pioneer Alan Lomax, this collaboratory brings together some of North America’s most distinctive and creative roots musicians to revive, recycle and re-imagine traditional music. The repertoire includes Bahamian sea chanties, African-American acappella singing from the Georgia Sea Islands, ancient Appalachian ballads, fiddle tunes and work songs collected from both well-known musicians and everyday folk: sea captains, cowhands, fishermen, prisoners, and homemakers. $20 in advance, $25 at the door, 12 and under free. Independent           Bookstore Day

Ft. Loudoun Commemoration

Historic Fort Loudoun Site, 419 N. Loudoun St., Winchester. 10am–1pm. In 1755 George Washington, at 23 years of age, was given command of the Virginia Regiment at the outset of the French & Indian War. In 1756 Washington oversaw the building of a chain of forts from Maryland to the Carolinas to protect settlers in the region. Winchester was chosen as the site of a “Strong Fort” to serve as an anchor and command center for the chain of forts. The French and Indian War Foundation commemorates this period each year at the site of the original Ft. Loudoun. The event includes interpreters who give visitors an opportunity to learn about the history of the frontier, the people who settled the Shenandoah Valley, and the conditions in which they lived. This new writers group meets at the Clarke County Library, 6:30pm on the 3rd Tuesday of each month, starting May 19.
